Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Live Scan fingerprinting in Fresno County.
What is Live Scan fingerprinting?
Live Scan is an inkless, electronic method of capturing fingerprints digitally and transmitting them directly to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or the FBI for a background check. Unlike traditional rolled ink fingerprints, Live Scan uses an optical scanner to capture high-quality digital images that are transmitted electronically — making the process faster, cleaner, and more accurate.
Who typically needs Live Scan fingerprinting?
Live Scan fingerprinting is required for a wide range of purposes in California: employment background checks for teachers, healthcare workers, and security personnel; professional licensing for real estate agents, contractors, attorneys, and nurses; adoption and foster care clearances; gaming license applications; volunteer work at schools or with children; firearm purchases; and any other situation where the California DOJ or FBI requires a background check.
What do I need to bring to my Live Scan appointment?
You will need: (1) A valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license, California ID, passport, or military ID; (2) A completed "Request for Live Scan Service" form (BCIA 8016), typically provided by the agency requiring the background check; and (3) Payment for the fingerprinting service fee. If your employer or licensing agency has not provided a BCIA 8016 form, contact them before your appointment — this form contains the specific ORI number needed to route your fingerprints correctly.
How long does the Live Scan fingerprinting process take?
The fingerprinting process typically takes 10–20 minutes per individual. Factors that can affect time include the quality of your fingerprints (some people naturally have more difficult-to-capture prints due to age or occupation) and whether any fingers need to be rescanned. For group sessions, we work efficiently to process everyone with minimal disruption. We always ensure quality results before completing your appointment.
How long does it take to receive background check results?
Once fingerprints are submitted to the California DOJ, results are typically returned to the requesting agency within 1–3 business days for most checks. FBI background checks may take 5–10 business days. RSK Professional Services does not control DOJ or FBI processing times — we handle only the fingerprint capture and submission. Your requesting agency receives the results directly and will notify you of the outcome.
What if my fingerprints are rejected by the DOJ?
In some cases, fingerprints may be rejected by the California DOJ due to poor print quality. This can happen if your fingerprints are naturally faint (common in older individuals or those who work with their hands), damaged, or if there was a capture issue. If this occurs, we will re-roll your fingerprints at no additional charge. In rare cases where fingerprints repeatedly cannot be captured electronically, the DOJ may allow submission of traditional ink-rolled fingerprints instead.
Can you fingerprint my entire organization on-site?
Yes! RSK Professional Services specializes in group and organizational fingerprinting events. We come to your school, hospital, business, or organization and process multiple employees or members on-site. This is ideal for new employee onboarding, compliance requirements, or any situation where you need multiple people fingerprinted. Contact us to discuss your organization's needs and we'll arrange a group session.
How much does mobile Live Scan fingerprinting cost?
Pricing depends on the type of service, the number of people being fingerprinted, and the location within Fresno County. The total cost includes our professional service fee plus the California DOJ and/or FBI processing fees set by the state. Group and organizational rates are available.
